The Clandeboye Herd consists of approximately 70 Holstein and 30 Jersey cows. Cows have been milked at Clandeboye since the 1950s. There was some early interest in pedigree breeding, but it was not until 1992 that the Clandeboye prefix came back into use. A whole herd grade up was undertaken and since then our aim has been to breed high yielding, long lasting cows with some hopefully good enough to take into the show ring.
Several females from well established families were purchased. These included Rosinas from Templedale, Willows from Wedgwood and Stars from Bondhaven in Canada. The Ruths originate from the local Ards while the graded up Charleen, Marie and Oonagh families are developing well. The latest addition to the herd is Clarkestown Duplex Dellia EX92.
The current herd average is 9057kgs at 4.27BF and 3.38PR. We have 30EX, 28VG and 6GP Holsteins and 11EX, 11VG and 3GP Jerseys.
In 2001 we renovated the dairy buildings and built a new milking parlour. Our aim was to create a high quality environment for both the cows and the people working with them. These renovations reduced the cow spaces available in the existing building from 130 to 100 and the herd was reduced proportionately. With more land available we are growing more of our own feed: Wheat and whole crop are successfully grown and a good crop of maize can be achieved most years.
2007 was a great year for the Clandeboye herd. In April the Holstein Herd was awarded Master Breeder status. The Holstein herd also won best overall herd in the Holstein Northern Ireland Herd Competition and then went on to win the Holstein UK’s Premier Herd Competition. The Jerseys herd has taken second place in the Ulster Jersey Cattle Club Competition in 2007, 2008 and 2009.
Clandeboye Champion Willow EX94-3 SP LP60 is without doubt our greatest success to date. In 2007 she was Supreme Champion at the Irish National Holstein Show, Exhibitor Bred Champion at Royal Ulster and Interbreed Dairy Champion at Ballymena. She also won the NISA/McClarnons Cow of the Year at Clogher Valley. 2008 saw her repeat her success at the Irish National, take Breed and Inter Breed Honours at Royal Ulster and the All Britain Reserve Junior Second Calf Cow award. In 2009 she won the All Britain Third Calf Cow title and took Reserve Champion and Exhibitor Bred Champion at the Causeway Classic Centenary Celebration Show.
Another Calbrett Champion daughter Clandeboye Champion Francesca is our latest winner having taken the Exhibitor Bred and Intermediate Champion titles at the Irish National in 2011. She continued in her winning ways at Balmoral taking the same championships.
In December 2010 Clandeboye Rocket Mabel EX91 took the Jersey Championship and the Honourable Mention Interbreed title at the RUAS Winter Fair. In 2011 it was the turn of Clandeboye Jazz Evita EX92 to take the Breed and this time Reserve Interbreed titles.
