The Courtyard
Clandeboye Courtyard is at the heart of the commercial activity of the estate, being used for public, corporate and private events.
The buildings in the Courtyard date from the early 18th century. Of particular interest are the gas house, built in baronial style, the dove-cote, the grand banqueting hall and the beautiful chapel.
The Banqueting Hall was built in 1895 as part of a project to convert some of the old farm buildings and coach houses. The first part of the project was to build the Chapel and this was followed by the creation of an American Bowling Alley in what is now the Simla Gallery, and a Sticke Court in what is now the James Fraser Room . Sticke is a form of indoor tennis, invented at that time and played on many country house estates. The Banqueting Hall was created at the same time, with its own entrance from the main house through what is now the bride’s room. The entrance from the Foyer was created later when the buildings were modernised for their current use.
